Session Outline

Building on the conference theme of Reimagining Personal Tutoring, the closing keynote will challenge participants to consider how they can apply their awareness of equity and inclusion to how they build interpersonal relationships with students and colleagues. A set of fundamental ideas and skills are the foundation of a holistic framework for professional development that centers one’s equity mindset. Importantly, the framework shows how a set of skills that you have developed in other areas of your professional life (e.g., teaching, advising) are transferable to personal tutoring. The Inclusive Professional Framework was developed by the National Science Foundation’s INCLUDES Aspire Alliance and reinforces the value of building an equity mindset and the interpersonal relationship skills to put it into practice. Grounded in UKAT’s Core Competencies of Advising & Tutoring and NACADA’s Academic Advising Core Competencies Model, the framework will give participants an opportunity to explore the transferable skills that have been there all along. By considering tutoring and advising awareness, knowledge and skills, attendees will be able to reflect on their strengths and areas for growth. Finally, lifting up an equity mindset will help participants consider questions about how to best center students when thinking about student success in higher education.

As a result of attending this session, participants will:

  • Consider how they engage students in equitable and inclusive ways in their advising and tutoring;
  • Explore the Inclusive Professional Framework, a holistic professional development approach that centers equity and transferable skills; and
  • Reflect on the transferability of awareness, knowledge and skills across their professional roles.
