Session Outline

At all levels, from the individual to the institutional, personal tutors and advisors often face the challenge of having to justify what they do, or prove the value of advising in general. The advocacy for advising is complicated, because of diverse stakeholder perspectives, and the problem of identifying benchmarks and measurement.

During this session, a panel of global advising experts and administrators will explore conditions and strategies for effective advising advocacy. Should we formulate goals, quality standards and professional competencies that define the intrinsic value of advising, when advising and personal tutoring often seem to be so context-dependent? Or should we focus less on the purpose and value of advising and personal tutoring as something that is distinct from the educational experience, and instead make a case for advising as being integral to the academic programme?

These and more questions will be discussed by the panel, with ample time for the audience to engage in the conversation.
