Session Outline

Building on the work outlined in the book chapter 'The power of future planning: Empowering personal tutors to have effective careers and employability conversations', (in 'The Higher Education Personal Tutor’s and Advisor’s Companion: Translating Theory into Practice to Improve Student Success' (2021) Critical Publishing), the authors Morag Walling and Rosanna Ayton from King’s College London are looking at how they can further embed future planning into personal tutoring conversations.

This workshop will provide an overview of work completed so far and open up the conversation to support what the next steps could be for King’s as well as your own institution, considering the insights that have come out of this collaboration.

Attendees should expect to leave with an interest in doing more in their own institutions to develop future-focused thinking in advising and tutoring conversations to support students to achieve the transformative benefits of university. Activities will enable participants to consider relevant concepts within the context of their own university models and activities for personal tutoring so that the benefits can be shared and embedded as widely as possible. A combination of guided questions, group discussion and contribution to a shared resource will form the backbone of the activities.
