Overview

This workshop is currently only available for institutional registration. Institutions interested in having this workshop delivered should contact curriculum@ukat.ac.uk for more information.

In this interactive workshop, you will use LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® inspired approach to explore the importance of setting and maintaining healthy boundaries—both for yourself and for the students you support. Through a series of hands-on activities, group discussions, and expert insights, you will learn how to establish boundaries around key areas such as time management, independence, and student engagement.

The workshop will also cover when boundaries have been reached and when to refer within your organisation. By the end of the session, you will have the tools and strategies to better care for yourself while providing effective support to students dealing with distressing or emotional situations. This workshop will help you and your colleagues to build a solid foundation for self-care and professional resilience.

What will you learn from engaging in this activity?

1.    Set personal boundaries as an adviser or tutor
2.    Agree on collective boundaries with colleagues
3.    Recognise when your capacity to provide support is reached
4.    Recognise when to refer within your organisation

What key concepts will you understand as a result of engaging in this activity?

  • The inter-relationship between student learning and student wellbeing can make it difficult to define and maintain boundaries. This can result in academics being drawn into supporting students beyond their role and competency
  • Maintaining boundaries protects students, staff and the university
  • It is easier to maintain boundaries if they are explained in advance of students experiencing problems and if they are consistently modelled
  • If academics are concerned about a student and how to maintain boundaries, they should seek support from appropriate colleagues

What essential questions will this activity address?

  • What are your own personal boundaries when supporting students?
  • How do your boundaries compare with your collegaues' boundaries?
  • How do we balance the maintenance of boundaries, emotional load, and time allocation?
