How do your own cultural identity and values affect how you communicate with your tutees? How do your tutees' cultural identity and values affect how they communicate with you? And how does this affect the tutoring process?

Participants will self-reflect on their own cultural identity and values, then consider how these impact the way they communicate with those from different cultures. Participants will have the opportunity to simulate intercultural communication in the advising context, then debrief the experience. Finally, participants will be given tools and suggestions for gaining cross-cultural experience within their own communities.

What will you learn from engaging in this activity?

  1. Critically reflect on their own assumptions about cultural communication and use Rapport Management Model as a human-centred lens to understand how communicative practices manage rapport in advising and teaching interactions.
  2. Examine basic theories on intercultural and cross-cultural communication
  3. Apply theories in real-case scenarios and formulate possible strategies to identify, acknowledge and respond to culturally different expectations and behaviours.

What key concepts will you understand as a result of engaging in this activity?

  • …students might make decisions that are rooted in cultural patterns that differ from our own
  • .... we have expectations that are rooted in our own cultural identity
  • …the way we communicate and behave are reflective of our own cultural identity
  • ... behind every culture there is a person who expresses their needs in a unique way. A relational approach might be more effective to understand and meet those.

What essential questions will this activity address?

  • In what ways does my own cultural identity influence how I perceive others?
  • What is an example of a cultural pattern that feels “wrong” in your perspective? Why do you think this might be?
  • In what ways my cultural background influence how I communicate and behave with my personal tutees/students?
  • What could be a relational strategy that I could use with my personal tutees/students?
  • As personal tutors and academic advisors, in what areas/topics should we pay more attention when communicating with our students?
