We recognise that students are the experts on student experience. As such, UKAT has established a Student Panel to better understand contemporary student issues and how they wish to be supported by academic advisors and personal tutors. The UKAT Student Panel will seek students’ views and experiences of academic advising/personal tutoring at all levels of study in higher education. This will allow the development of sector insight, resources and will help to inform the strategic activities of UKAT.
The group will meet online twice a year in October and February, with an open invitation to meet at the UKAT Annual Conference.
Audience
The Student Panel is open to all full and part-time taught students in Higher Education who are supported through their programme with a personal tutor/academic advisor. Student panel members who graduate will be invited to stay for an additional 12 months so that the panel can benefit from their reflective experience.
The benefits of joining this group are:
- Representation of the student voice on personal tutoring/academic advising.
- Reflect on one’s own experience and the experiences of others.
- Contribution to the national debate on personal tutoring/academic advising.
- Networking opportunity to meet other students and to hear how advising happens in other institutions.
- Experience of contributing to a member-led national organisation.
- Experience of working collaboratively and across institutions.
- Opportunity to influence policy and practice.
This group is open to all members of the higher education community. If you are not a UKAT member, you will need to create an account to join this group.
Aims
The Student Panel aim to amplify the voices and lived experiences of students who are currently in Higher Education, who can shed light on the core challenges and opportunities that students face, and what they value most in their student-personal tutor/academic advisor relationship. Through their insight, it is hoped that members of the panel will help shape UKAT resources and inform approaches to personal tutoring/academic advising, highlighting what works well and where improvement is needed.
Contributions and Outputs
The Student Panel Special Interest Group has recently contributed to the enhancement of personal tutoring/academic advising practice in higher education through the creation of the following outputs:
