Session Outline

Most UK universities define Graduate Attributes which identify key transferable skills, attitudes, and characteristics which they intend students to achieve by studying at the institution. Personal tutoring/academic advising is perfectly situated to facilitate students to develop and acquire graduate attributes but rarely do we intentionally plan and evaluate the tutoring/advising process to do so.

In this interactive workshop, we explore the principles of defining student outcomes and a structured personal tutoring programme, before presenting prototype personal tutoring planning tools that supports the planning of such a programme. The session will provide multiple examples of potential advising and tutoring learning outcomes and will solicit others from workshop participants to provide the building blocks for considering how learning outcomes can be scaffolded throughout students’ engagement at their institution. The focus in the session will be on how these initial “building blocks” might need to be adapted to meet local needs. Also considered in the session will be the type of activities that can be associated with specific learning outcomes as well as a means of evaluating student learning.
