Session Outline

As adult learners, students are ultimately responsible for their own academic success. However, in recent years, the responsibility for monitoring and managing student engagement has shifted significantly toward universities. This evolving dynamic has, in some cases, unintentionally reduced student agency, positioning institutions as the primary drivers of engagement rather than fostering a collaborative partnership between students and educators.

At Kortext, we advocate for a student-centred approach that empowers learners to take an active role in shaping their educational journey. By equipping students with meaningful insights into their engagement, we can cultivate academically purposeful learning behaviours that drive success. Our student engagement analytics platform, StREAM, is designed to support this vision—ensuring that students are not passive recipients of support but instead key participants in the process.

In this discursive session, we will explore how engagement analytics can enhance student advising conversations, positioning students as informed partners in their academic development. Hear how the University of Bedfordshire are working to leverage student engagement data to support constructive discussions that foster self-reflection, motivation, and proactive learning strategies. Participants will gain insights into interpreting engagement analytics and applying them within advising settings to drive meaningful student outcomes.

The session will conclude with a discussion on best practices for integrating engagement analytics into academic and pastoral support, ensuring that universities and students work together in partnership to create a culture of shared responsibility for learning and success.
