Session Outline

This interactive workshop explores the evolving challenges and barriers to on-campus learning faced by today’s diverse student population. Drawing on anonymised Student Engagement data and insights from Personal Tutors within the Finance & Economics department at Manchester Met, we will examine key factors contributing to low attendance and engagement during Semester 1 of the 2025/26 academic year. Our Finance & Economics student demographic across all levels and programmes for 2025/26 indicates 56% are first generation students, 63% of home students join from more deprived areas, 69% are Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) students and 32% enter with a vocational qualification. This student entry profile data is important to help identify and respond to the key challenges our students face throughout their Higher Education journey.

Through collaborative discussions and scenario-based activities, participants will share best practices and develop strategies for supporting students with complex, interconnected issues. Initial primary research indicates four key themes: Cost of Living, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Caring responsibilities and Commuter barriers to learning.

Working in small groups, delegates will engage with real-world scenarios based around these key themes. Participants will:

 Develop initial responses and signposting strategies for students facing diverse issues.

 Examine the boundaries of the Personal Tutor role, distinguishing between coaching and counselling.

 Identify gaps and barriers in current student support practices.

 Share best practices and co-create actionable approaches for supporting students with interconnected challenges.

 Co-create actionable approaches to enhance student engagement and success across institutions.

Learning Outcomes

• Recognise the key challenges currently impacting student engagement and attendance in Higher Education.

• Collaborate on practical strategies and share best practices for addressing complex, interconnected student issues.
