Session Outline

In this presentation we will set out our experiences of shifting personal tutoring to a process that supports academic develoepment, while also encompassing training, recognition and the inclusion of professional services staff in student support roles. We will examine the range of different personal tutoring models at work at Warwick and consider how these meet the dynamic changes in cohort shape and size, and in light of evolving student needs. We will discuss our approach to framing these models around student success and inclusion, and explore how we are implementing a holistic approach which includes suitable acknowledgement of the development needs and wellbeing issues experienced by staff in pursuit of student support. The presentation will build on a paper delivered at the 2025 UKAT conference on experiences of organising a student-staff partnered approach and will emphasise how we have engaged with wider developments including through a relaunched Education & Student Experience Strategy at Warwick to improve educational outcomes. We will discuss our revised approach to training, development and reward. The workshop will complement UKAT’s ongoing work around the academic advising continuum, noting our approach to personal tutoring as one which seeks to empower students to grow as independent, healthy and confident learners.
