Overview

Learners will self-reflect on their own cultural identity and values, then consider how these impact the way they communicate with those from different cultures. Learners will have the opportunity to simulate intercultural communication in the advising context, then debrief the experience. Finally, learners will be given tools and suggestions for gaining cross-cultural experience within their own communities, including exercises that can be reproduced in the classroom, with colleagues, in a small group setting.

 

What will you learn from engaging in this activity?

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • understand different styles of communication and its connection to cultural difference
  • gain self-awareness regarding how their own cultural norms influence the way they perceive others
  • appreicate basic theories on intercultural communication

Students might make decisions that are rooted in cultural patterns that differ from our own. The way we communicate is reflective of our own cultural identity

In what ways does my own cultural identity influence how I perceive others?

What is an example of a cultural pattern that feels “wrong” in your perspective? Why do you think this might be?
