Session Outline


UK Advising and Tutoring (UKAT) stated in 2020 that “for too long Personal Tutoring has not been given the attention it deserves”. This session explores how personal academic tutoring supported by digital tools can make a fundamental contribution to the personalisation of learning in Higher Education. Using recent case study research on the use of e-portfolios to support the tutorial process, it further outlines how, now and in the future, the key relationship between tutor and student can enhance engagement and ensure academic success. Finally the session will consider whether individual tutorials can remain relevant to sustainable learning in the University of the future?

This session is relevant to anyone with an interest in student engagement and personal academic tutoring. There will also be a focus on e-portfolios, digital learning and learner analytics.

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Have an understanding of contemporary perspectives on Personal Academic Tutoring within the HE Sector
  • Learn about student and staff perceptions of an e-portfolio approach to personal academic tutoring within a research intensive university
  • Be able to consider alternative models and mechanisms for student support and development
