Opening Keynote: The Interpretive Paradigm in Academic Advising

Session Outline

The presenter claims that research in academic advising/personal tutoring has moved in recent years beyond both qualitative and quantitative social science approaches and now encompasses approaches from the humanities such that we can now talk of a Narrative Paradigm in the practice of academic advising/personal tutoring. He will explore the ramifications that this might have for the practice of personal tutoring, drawing upon traditions and approaches in the humanities. He will put forward eight fundamental principles for those who would practice from within this paradigm.
