Session Outline
This presentation will present findings from a case study on how the Adventures in Advising podcast serves as a vehicle for public-facing scholarship in the field of academic advising. This study employs multiple forms of data: content analysis of 100 podcast episodes, reflections of the podcast creator, and interviews with avid listeners who are practicing academic advisors. The study examines how the podcast disseminates knowledge, fosters professional development, and builds a community of practice. By investigating the creator's experiences and challenges, as well as the podcast's impact on listeners' professional identity and sense of community, this research highlights the role of digital media in shaping the emerging profession of academic advising. The findings offer practical implications for podcast creators, academic advisors, and professionals engaged in public-facing scholarship.
Research Purpose and Questions
1. How does a podcast contribute to the dissemination and development of knowledge in the field of academic advising through public-facing scholarship?
2. What are the experiences and insights of the podcast creator regarding the production, challenges, and impact of the podcast as a form of public-facing scholarship in academic advising?
Theoretical Framework
This research is grounded in the concept of public-facing scholarship, which emphasizes the dissemination of academic knowledge beyond traditional academic circles. Public-facing scholarship is designed to make scholarly knowledge more accessible and applicable to broader communities, often bridging the gap between academia and practice. Podcasts, as a digital medium, have emerged as a critical tool in this endeavor. They offer a unique platform for informal, yet impactful, knowledge sharing, often bypassing the barriers that formal academic publications impose.
Methodology
1. Content Analysis: The research will analyze the transcripts of 100 episodes of the Adventures in Advising podcast. This analysis will focus on identifying recurring themes, key messages, and areas of emphasis related to professional development, community building, and knowledge dissemination in academic advising.
2. Reflective Journals of the Podcast Creator: The podcast creator reflects on his experiences, challenges, and perspectives on the role of the podcast in fostering public-facing scholarship.
3. Interviews with Avid Listeners: The study will also include interviews with 5-10 avid listeners who are practicing academic advisors. These interviews provide insights into how listeners engage with the podcast, how it influences their professional identity, and how it shapes their sense of community within the academic advising field.
Conclusion
This research offers valuable insights into how digital media can foster professional development and knowledge dissemination in an emerging field.
Learning Outcomes
2. Participants will learn strategies to value their advising stories and empower their students.
3. Participants will learn tips on creating and/or maintaining a podcast.
