Session Outline

Is personal tutoring just about being supportive and giving the right answers or about developing independence and accountability for your tutees? Are personal tutors supported enough to feel confident and equipped in being effective in this role?

Our research into the experience of personal tutoring and barriers for effective tutoring practice showed that there was a need for training and development in this area for all staff who hold this role. The project started in 2019 with two training programmes for tutors, both focused on the coaching approach to tutoring.

The evaluation of the project showed us that tutors feel more confident after completion of the training and that they can see how this approach can reduce their workload in the long term.

This session will talk about why we decided to take a coaching approach, what training and development opportunities were provided, and the first results we observed. We will talk about our current personal tutoring development package and what next…
