Session Outline
Personal Tutoring has become an increasing important feature across Higher Education due in part to increasing student needs, a focus of Higher Education on student retention and student experience. However, finding a single ‘one size fits all’ model that works within complex local systems, for staff and students seems elusive. So, what works for who and in what circumstances? The facilitators of this interactive workshop have conducted a review of the published evidence on principles and practice of personal tutoring within the UK over the last 5 years.
We use the results of this review as a basis for this interactive workshop with UKAT delegates. Models and approaches to personal tutoring can be broadly grouped as Pastoral, Professional and Integrated within the curriculum.
The proposed workshop will explore existing practices for personal tutoring with delegates to determine the barriers to and facilitators of evidence-based practice reflecting on their local setting. Furthermore, theoretical and methodological approaches to evaluating the impact of educational and training initiatives for personal tutoring as well as personal tutoring (individual and institutional) in relation to engagement of students, impact on student experience and success will be discussed reflecting on applicability, reliability and quality. Participants will consider their suitability and usefulness in their own contexts
This interactive workshop will begin with a brief introduction to our review of the literature.
Through the workshop we invite participants to reflect on their own provision and that of others in the workshop, we will explore pros and cons, as well as opportunities in relation to evidence from the review.
This workshop will engage in audience participation:
- Small Group discussion and tasks in relation to a number of scenarios and questions
- Whole group collaboration with peers to explore different approaches to personal tutoring, mapping and application of theory to practice
Ideas and contributions will be collated through flip charts and via Mentimeter.
We will gather and summarise the learning and knowledge generated through the workshop as an output and share with participants post-conference.
